The most widely used solar thermal technologies in West Africa are solar water heating systems; nevertheless, the adoption of these systems has been slower than expected. This review introduced the three technical methods upon which solar energy can be harnessed, and the solar water heating process falls under the thermal method. The working principle of the solar water heating system was explained to involve gathering heat in a solar collector; transfer the heat to the water supply; and store the heated water until it is used. Solar water heaters were then classified based on method of flow circulation and the type of solar collector. The components of the system for heat collection, heat storage, heat delivery and freeze protection were also introduced. Concept of Modelling and Simulation of solar Water Heating System as well as prospect of the system in family homes, clinics, and other settings reported from literature were included in the review. The review after highlighting the prospects of system however identified some areas that were not resolved in the existing literature to include: hybridizing solar water heater with incinerator water heater, optimizing the performance of the hybrid system using computational fluid dynamics techniques, as well as the sustainability evaluation for the deployment of the system in Clinics and other settings.
